What Are Causes of Stress Fractures?

Most people have heard of shin splints, which affect the lower leg bone as the result of hard pounding while running. But this same activity can also affect the metatarsals of the foot, resulting in stress fractures. Metatarsals are the five long bones in the foot that connect the heel and arch to the toes. The second and third metatarsals are those most likely to develop stress fractures, which are tiny cracks in the bones. This makes sense because this is the area of the foot that takes the brunt of pounding during activity. Stress fractures are thought to be more common in women and older people. Participating in certain activities – including running, playing basketball, dancing, and marching – also increases the likelihood of developing stress fractures. Types of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are open sores or wounds that often occur on the feet of people with diabetes. There are three main types of DFUs. Neuropathic ulcers constitute 90% of DFUs. They are associated with diabetic neuropathy and involve damaged nerves leading to a loss of sensation in the feet. Without sensation, it can be difficult to detect a wound until it has progressed. Ischemic ulcers are associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD), which causes poor circulation. Without adequate circulation, DFUs heal slowly and poorly. The third type of DFUs, neuroischemic ulcers, are caused by a combination of diabetic neuropathy and PAD. Why Heel Spurs Form

Heel Spurs are calcium deposits that form on the bottom of the heel near the arch. This area of the foot is referred to as the plantar fascia. Heel spurs can occur when the heel bone and plantar fascia are exposed to repeated stress. This type of stress can be due to over-stretching the plantar fascia, habitual tearing of the heel bone’s thin lining, and straining ligaments and muscles in the feet. The stress in this area usually also causes plantar fasciitis (an inflammation of the plantar fascia). Because heel spurs are not always painful, and usually occur along with plantar fasciitis, they can often go undetected. Symptomatic heel spurs can create a sharp pain, inflammation and tenderness, and feel warm to the touch. People who are obese, older, or who wear improper footwear, are more at risk of developing heel spurs, as well as those who participate in activities such as running and jumping repeatedly, or who suffer from osteoarthritis. A podiatrist will typically use X-rays to identify and diagnose heel spurs.
